John Mayer is a good comparison I think. His early music in my opinion is genius. Continuum is an album that I have listened to in its entirety hundreds of times. Each song is just all that. Battle Studies to me was more of an attempt at doing pop music and didn't have the same Bluesy feel to it. I liked it and there are a few songs like Edge of Desire and Assassin that I love but it wasn't Continuum. He is now going through a Bob Dylan phase. He has done some of the new music which some people are going ape shit over. Each of the songs I've heard so far don't make me want to hear them more than once much less hundreds of times. So I think like Lady Gaga he will have fans like me who will probably pass on his new album. She seems to me to be going for shock value. Her early music was great and the songs I've heard so far sound like throw away songs that she decided to put together on an album just to get it out so people don't forget her.

Corwin,

Thanks for your comment. Yeah, it's really just this idea that things are dead or dying or gone or whatever that sort of irks me. Because it dominates the conversation, and we're so quick to say this thing is irrelevant or that thing doesn't work anymore, blah blah blah. Relevance is in the eye of the beholder. The sideline critique seems to always favor the most drastic of all results, that being that something is dead and gone. That's just not the case.

Well argued. Prince pretty clearly got on the wrong end of the digital sales bus, which isn't to say he's not well within his (copy)rights to stay out off iTunes and the like. I think the most important point you make here is that it's a 'different strokes for different yokels' kind of industry we're floundering in.

To that I'd add that e-stores bring in new listeners and buyers at least as much as they shift the paradigm for established artists.

Thanks.
