Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-Z- Why Hov Won’t Return His Calls

October 30, 2009 by
Filed under Hustler's Ambition, Words From The Genius

Since Beanie Sigel’s halfway dis record against Jay-Z, “What You Talkin Bout” debuted on Kay Slay’s show on Hot97 last night, the internets/streets are going nuts about the Broad Street Bully airing out Hov.

First, the song. People are going ape shit but in reality, this song is like, not good. The beat, a middling drum pattern with a tick-tocky clock-like melody, is a mellow backdrop so you can clearly hear what Beanie’s saying. Except he’s not really saying much. which makes this song itself a total non-event.

Secondly, the interview. In the first half it sounds like Beans is genuinely peeved about a bunch of things that went on with Roc-A-Fella, all legitimate beefs. He talks a bit about going to jail, how the Young Gunz were only getting $1200 a night on the road with Jay, himself not being paid on tours, money that he thought he was due through a sneaker deal with Pro Keds, so on and so forth. Without any intimate knowledge of the business affairs that went on at Roc-A-Fella, I’ve no doubt in my mind that the  funny money situations Beans speaks about with album advances, recording budgets and Roc-A-Fella’s various business, were really occurring. This is the record business, shit happens.

The most striking part of the interview to me though, was when Beanie says he hasn’t spoken to Jay-Z in two years. He mentions that he can’t get in touch with Jay, that it takes talking to 5 people to speak with him. To hear Beanie tell it, Shawn Carter is like the Michael Corleone of the rap game. Except he’s really not.

Beanie Sigel thinks that Roc-A-Fella was a family. It wasn’t. Beanie Sigel was signed as a recording artist to Roc-A-Fella Records, given an album budget to record songs which the label could then exploit in the marketplace. In terms of that avenue of business, not mixtape songs or whether Beanie Sigel is “nice” or he bodied so and so on a track or went to war with Jadakiss or Nas, he was not very successful. To the best of my knowledge, only one Beanie Sigel album went Gold, and that was his first LP, The Truth, which was spearheaded by a Jay-Z single, “Anything.” Keep in mind this was the year 2000, when a rapper could literally take a piss on a record and it would have sold platinum or better. That Jay-Z had the single from another artist on his label’s debut LP should tell you something- Beans was a commercial liability from day 1. As Beans alludes to in his new song, he “brought the fellas to Roc-A-Fella.” Yeah, that’s exactly what he did. He lent an element of goonery to Roc-A-Fella when all they had was Jay and Bleek (hardly what I’d call goons).

Beanie was like Jay-Z’s Tony Yayo, except less paid.

On top of all this, Beanie signed with Dame Dash Music Group back in 2004. In a wikipedia entry on Beanie, it says he made the decision to sign with Dame over Jay because he’d never spent time around Jay on and off day. That he had a more personal relationship with Dame and Biggs. Now here he is, five years later, saying they were like a family, that he wants a phone call blah blah blah. He didn’t want that phone call in 2004, when he was sitting in Jay’s office (according to the Charlemagne interview), asking to be let out of his contract. So what’s the real story?

Perhaps Jay is like Michael Corleone, and once you take sides with another family, you’re done in his eyes. Or perhaps it’s a lot less dramatic, and it’s more like, as I alluded to above, Beanie never really being much of a marquee player, more like a Rick Mahorn-style bruiser who was on the team just to rough up the other team’s best player (Jadakiss, Nas, Jaz-0, etc).

In that respect, Beanie would fall in line with a whole assortment of characters who Jay-Z has left by the wayside as he’s moved on to bigger and better things.  Take a number- R. Kelly, Foxy Brown, Jaz-O, Amil, Dame Dash, DMX, Irv Gotti, Ski Beatz, Sauce Money… this list goes on and on. My thought is, Beanie should add his name to the list of those who may never get a return call from Hov. This whole scenario is sounding like a Tweet song right about now.

you sound like a JAY z dick ryder or jay z personal PR how bout u take wat u just said into consideration and wonder why all these people keep coming at jay s neck could it b cause hes a dirt bag and he doesnt look out for the ones that stuck their necks out for him u mention evrything in ya bullshit analysis but wat about jay not coming to see beans or writing him back u ass and im not even a beans fan you sound like a jay fan though study both sides why do they all have the same story jay only looks out for himself cause its probably true

  3. I’d like you to say to Bleek’s face that he’s hardly a goon. You must have mixed him up with Kanye or something. I’m pretty sure Bleek would smack you with a bottle, if his entourage didn’t get to you first.

  4. THEflyGIRL says:

You are so correct. Beanie is a perfect example of someone who doesn’t understand that it’s not show friends, it’s show business.

So based on the context of what you say above, the reader expects the writer to extrapolate on the fact that Jay-Z is indeed easy to get a hold of. The fact that you don’t do this is evidence of your poor writing ability.

Before this, Mr. Cantor, you say:

“Secondly, the interview. In the first half it sounds like Beans is genuinely peeved about a bunch of things that went on with Roc-A-Fella, all legitimate beefs.”

Then after what you call ‘legitimate beefs’, you de-legitimate them by saying that ‘it’s business and shit happens.’ This is another example of not only your poor writing ability, but also your problems with basic logical arguments.

While, I’m disappointed that Nah Right linked this in the sidebar, I can’t hate that you have a blog that you populate with content. I can however, call you on having very subpar content – of which I gave evidence of above.

  10. b-ease says:

Just to clarify, Beans’ first two CDS both went gold, with the The Truth being a hair away from platinum.

Gotta also agree with heightsy, I’m a little disappointed with the content and actual writing in the article. The most interesting piece is the Wiki article you cut and pasted.

I tweeted this response to the comments but here I’ll post it. You’re all missing the point- Jay’s not hard to get in touch with. He just doesn’t see any reason to talk to Beanie. If a business relationship with Beanie had value for Jay-Z in 2009, I’m sure he’d dial him up. Just like Foxy Brown and all the others. But it doesn’t have any value. And if it was ever anything more than just business, then Beans showed where his loyalties lied in 04, when he signed with Dame. Therefore, Jay-Z will never be making that call. The end.

  12. 2Kool says:

yo gooch seriously SHUT the fuck up u dont make any sense

  13. JihaD says:

Your first mistake was using a WIKIPEDIA article (a public forum with questionable information that has been repeatedly proven WRONG) as evidence, when there are multiple comments made by Sigel himself (most notably, the interview he did on DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz radio, which is found on the Streetz iz Watching mixtape) that he wasn’t SIGNED period. Your second mistake, going off the information given, is that if the case was that Sigel was signed to DDMG, why would he have to go thru JAY-Z to secure a release? Your argument that Jay doesn’t talk to him due to association with Dame is moot because both the evidence you presented and the truth of the matter (that Sigel remained a Roc-A-Fell/Def Jam artist following his release from prison) hinges on faulty evidence, which is repeatedly found to be false. Your final mistake was sounding like a complete stan; instead of logically pointing to sigel’s comments, you come off as Jay=z publicist, trying to argue WHY Sigel must be incorrect, instead of attempting to analyze his comments from pre-existing information. Comments like “Jay-Z isn’t hard to get in touch of” reek of stannery; What evidence do YOU have to give to contridict Sigel’s claims?

Anyway, this situation is a by-product of the “Roc-La-Familia” mentality, “Secret Society, All We Ask is Trust” vibe that Jay was so proud of when it benefited him from a street perspective. He (and by extension, Dame) did not treat their “artists” like artists; They were having “soul food sundays” and other things to reinforce the values they wanted their artists to have. The problem is that someone like Sigel, who was in need of that type of structure and atmosphere, was consistantly positioned as Jay’s “right hand man,” even more so than Bleek. Judging by Beans’ comments, it was apparent that Jay treated him as though he was intregal to the success of Roc-A-Fella records, when it has become apparent that Jay did not feel the same way. Thats where the root of this problem lies– Your not supposed to mix friendship and business, but in hip-hop, that’s what these “label heads” (from Dipset to G-Unit to Roc-A-Fella to Bad Boy to Death Row) do, and thats why the break-ups are so ugly.

    JihaD

  14. ChuckDofdaSouth says:

JihaD, you hit the nail on the head. But is wrong to use this family business style as a label head? Plus this is why the Lyor’s, etc agreed to do business with these dudes. When the break up happens nobody can blame it on the big record label. The same thing happened with the original Cash Money crew. They gotta learn when to be big brother and when to be the boss. With each record label most of the beef comes from the underboss doing something for the team and the boss keeping all the money. These are all examples of the growing pains in hip hop. At least dudes aint dying during these break ups like they used to. Our black record labels will never grow into the huge powerhouses that Makaveli rapped about, b/c they all implode in the same sad way. Four years from now Drake and Weezie will be beefing…In general, rappers have got to learn that having your paperwork together is just as important as have the write studio equipment….This Ghetto PSA was brought to you by one of the good folks down in Texas, where we live in a Gray Tape Era State of Mind…be easy folks

  15. Qoos says:

If Beans would have been able to control his little addictions and have some clarity in his moves and decisions, maybe things would have beeen different.

  16. JihaD says:

    @ChuckDofdaSouth

The old “___________ is the Army” label foundation is flawed in much the same manner as a parent attempting to be “friends” with their child; at some point, the parent is going to try to disciplne the child, and the child isn’t going to have it. The large labels encouraged the “crew” movement because people are attracted to power– we root for a group of guys (with the always present “murda mami”) “forming like voltron” to take over the industry. This is why the Roc, Dipset,Ruff Ryders, G-Unit, Dungeon Family, Cash Money, Death Row, Bad Boy, etc used this template for success; We WANTED them to win–we felt as though we were a part of the “movement,”the success was shared with us all. The problem in (nearly all) these situations is that the label head is a successful artist themselves, and eventually the other artists don’t want to either A) stay under the shadow of the successful artists or B) continue to share the profit/spotlight with the other artists. Beanie Sigel, much like the Lox before him (First nigga talking that family shit/get a lotta dough don’t give the family shit~ Jadakiss), fell into the mentality that they really “were” a family (due to the culture that was fostered) and that label chain became his home. He forgot about being an artist; he was a “brother” to Shawn. That was why it was so hard to hear Shawn “refuse” to let him out of his contract, or not put him on BP3, or refuse to sign his release papers; he thought Shawn was really the person he had come to know, when in actuality Shawn was simply a Nino Brown– someone promoting friendship until you are no longer useful to his overall plans. This is why it hurts to hear Beans talk about this; sticking with the New Jack Metaphor, Beans represents G Money– A disgruntled fuck-up who really thought this ONE person would be “his brother’s keeper,” regardless of the actions which led up to the final falling out. The Song/conversation and response that Shawn just relayed pretty much juxtaposes the final confrontation between Nino and G-Money, with Shawn’s response being the final shot to the head– he didn’t quite believe what he was saying himself, but he knew he had to create some finality to the situation.

  18. uuuh... says:

The entire rap game is an image, a fact that’s known to pretty much anyone with a brain. The smart ones go about their business in making music, selling records, touring, etc., and basically making the right moves towards building and preserving their brand … besides them, it’s fuckheads like Beanie who’ve gotten caught up in the folly of THEIR own ways and now, years after, get desperate and convince themselves it wasn’t their fault instead of just picking up the pieces and rebuilding. This dude’s voice is cracking up over diss songs, boiling with emotion over what? On some….thank you, we missed you, welcome back to the team type shit? If his ass still had some kind of standing in the game, Hov or no Hov, he wouldn’t make this whole thing into a “Drama Hour” issue cause, from where I stand, it’s a simple case of disloyalty backfiring and the culprit crawling back to the dude gave him a career to be begin with for recourse even though it’s CLEARLY undeserved. He chose to roll with Dame, and who’s fault is that? Yeah, self-centeredness and selfishness have been given new webster contexts by Hov alone…but what exactly is the crime in refusing to pick up an albeit-then loyal but ex girlfriend’s phonecall after she openly dumped you for your bestfriend, got knocked up after a few years and is now back at your doorstep begging for a helping hand with child support, all while being too cowardly to say it outright? If Beans was a truly “real nigga” he’d tell the world flat out that as of right now he’s too weak an artist to sell records, is having income issues and has therefore resorted to crying for attention all over the Internet and radio so Jay-Z could hand him some kleenex, pen down a belated kite and hook him up with some Kanye beats.

SO BEANIE SIGEL WAS A SOLDIER FOR JAY-Z?

WHERE’S THE DISS RECORD FROM BEANIE SIGEL AGAINST JIM JONES? AGAINST CAM? AGAINST NAS? AGAINST 50? AGAINST KLEIN? AGAINST LIL WAYNE?

I MUST HAVE MISSED THOSE DISS RECORDS FROM THIS “SOLDIER.”

BEANS IS A LOSER. PERIOD. HE KEPT GOING TO JAIL EVEN WHEN HIS STAR WAS RISING. WHY ON EARTH SHOULD JAY-Z VOUCH FOR HIM IF HE CAN’T KEEP HIMSELF OUT OF JAIL? HE WENT TO JAIL 3 TIMES IN 2 YEARS AFTER JAY-Z REFUSED TO VOUCH FOR HIM. SO, WHO’S THE SMART ONE, HUH?

IF BEANS WAS SERIOUS ABOUT THAT CONVO WITH JAY-Z, HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED OUT OF JAIL. JAY’S A WORLD ICON. VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW WHO BEANIE SIGEL IS. FEWER KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE (MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY THINK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT BUGSY SIEGEL).

YOU DON’T MESS WITH JAY-Z WHEN YOU’RE BEANIE SIGEL. PERIOD. IF JAY WAS IGNORING HIM, BEANS SHOULD HAVE GONE INTO SELF-REFLECTION, BECAUSE YOU CAN BE DAMN SURE THERE WAS A GOOD REASON WHY JAY WAS IGNORING HIM. HE SHOULD HAVE REFLECTED ON WHAT HE HAD DONE WRONG, AND GONE FORWARD AND MADE GOOD MUSIC, THANKED JAY IN INTERVIEWS, AND SENT HIM BIRTHDAY CARDS. EVENTUALLY JAY WOULD HAVE (IF BEANS DESERVED IT) ACKNOWLEDGED BEANS. THAT’S HOW YOU DO A BOSS.

BEANS IS A LOSER. HIS CAREER IS OVER. HE’S GOING TO SPEND THE REST OF HIS CAREER IN NIGHTCLUBS LIKE THIS ONE SERENADING A BUNCH OF GHETTO FANS.

Thats true about the Beyonce line, because by now, she’s heard the line and whatever rumors arise from that line and demand clarification. All i’m saying is if i’m married to Beyonce and another man’s action cause me to sleep in the spare room, i’m knocking somebody the f! out!

That being said Scarface & New Jack City are 2 of my favorite films but they are fiction.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the 1st time Beans has tried to use that analogy to describe his relationship with Jay-Z thats why now when I listen to these bars i’m like Jay really read Beans like a book.

“What we talkin’ bout fiction Or we talkin bout fact/You talkin’ bout fiction? Hold up pardon my back”

Hence the lack of communication and more bars like Grown men want me to sit em on my lap/But I don’t have a beard and Santa Claus ain’t black
I repeat, You can’t sit on my lap/I don’t have a beard Now get off my sack/Scream at me!!!

All Beans wants is a conversation about where things went wrong and Jay-Z is “Already Home” & “On to the Next One.” LOL!

Plus Tony Montana & Nino Brown were drug kingpins Jay-Z ain’t sold drugs in more than a decade, Jay is a legitimate businessman and a tax payer the rules are different.

I never understood why rappers love to compare themselves to flawed business models (CMB and Tony Montana). If the dream is to be successful then why not compare yourself and mold your business to existing businesses that are thriving and have been successful for decades? Beans’ story is unfortunately is commonplace throughout the music industry. It’s the reason we love those VH1 Behind The Music stories. And the comparisons to New Jack City and Scarface is kinda flawed because Beanie was never looked at as a partner on any level. He was always a worker and was always perceived as a worker because he could not leave the streets alone, which means his decision making skills were flawed. And I feel that once people saw that in Beans then did they begin to take advantage of him financially. Jay not letting Beans go of his contract so he could possibly sign with 50 was a business move and you can say a little bit of ego was involved. Business because once Jay sold Rocafella to Def Jam, he knew he couldn’t take any of the artists when he would eventually leave so he had to make sure that Beans stayed put. A little bit of ego is because if 50 Cent succeeded in a short amount of time what Jay couldn’t do after 3 or 4 albums by Beans then Jay would be looked at as a failure. How could Jay not succeed in bringing success to Beans who many would consider the most potent lyrical MC that Jay & Dame has ever signed? Can Jay now even do the record “You Me Him Her” now that 2 of the people on the record are now gone? I use to like when they did record. Can anyone even find a youtube clip of all of them doing that record, including Amil?
